Toyota “Grasping for Salvation”

Auto manufacturers aren’t known for their humility, at least not in America. Japanese CEO of Toyota Motors, Akio Toyoda, made some startling admissions the other day when he said the company is “grasping for salvation” as it predicts a $5 billion loss in the current fiscal year. Citing Jim Collins’ book “How the Mighty Fail,” Toyoda referred to an arrogance that allowed the current crisis to take shape, beyond merely the economic meltdown. It seems that Japanese culture, and possibly Mr. Toyoda himself, have recognized the corporate consequences of pride and arrogance.
